An Interview With Dana Nelson
Question:
Hello, I’m Dana Gillian and I’m talking today with Dana Nelson, a pharmacy owner and a pharmacist from San Luis Obispo, California. Mr. Nelson is a Fellow in the American Society for Consultant Pharmacists, as well the holder of a Masters in Physiology Pharmacology. His professional experience with the Wiley Protocol is what he will share with us today.
How has the Wiley Protocol affected your pharmacy business?
Dana Nelson:
Our practice considerably increased, and this is both good for the community and for us. It’s given the community of round chair a place to get good information, solid information on the hormone replacement not only just for females but for males also. As the protocols expand, it’s been able to have other parts of our business increase also. People start to see that we provide a variety of services that they can take advantage of as they come in. For everybody, it’s a win-win situation.
Question:
How did you first learn about the Wiley Protocol?
Dana Nelson:
Actually some patients brought an opportunity to me. They’ve been using a Santa Barbara pharmacy which was inconvenient in terms of location, so they approached me and asked if I could provide the Protocol for them, so I studied it. Did some research on it and I thought it was a very good idea.
Question:
The Wiley Protocol benefits what kind of patients most?
Dana Nelson:
That’s an interesting question because there’s no real prototypical Wiley Protocol patient. We have patients as young as 18 or 19, when we’re treating endometriosis and PCOS and we have patients that are in their seventies and eighties where they’re just using the medication to make sure that they have a good quality of life and everything in between. Some adjustments and work are required. We can get the positive outcomes that we’re looking for if the patient is committed to an outcome, as well as by titration and working in sufficient locations.
Question:
You said your patients that’re 18 and 19. A 20-year-old’s hormone is used in the cream substitute. How does that help a 19 year old?
Dana Nelson:
Not all 18 year olds are normal. Endometriosis occurs in some 18 and 19-year-olds. They will have PCOS in which they will have a variety of hormone imbalances. Not all 18 to 25-year-olds are healthy, and this has been very effective for those who aren’t.
Question:
As a pharmacist, what are the benefits of Wiley Protocol?
Dana Nelson:
I have more friends. My patients have become very close to me and that’s wonderful but also we get to do a lot of good in people’s lives. One of the most rewarding things to hear from anybody is how we have turned their lives around. We do what we do for this reason.
Question:
As a pharmacist, what do you find most valuable about Biomimetic Hormone Restoration Therapy?
Dana Nelson:
By using Biomimetic Hormone Replacement, the rhythmic cyclic method, my patient’s outcomes have been better. In a cycle, it’s a more natural replacement system. Instead of a once or twice a day dose, it actually allows a return to normalcy on variable dosing or static dosing. In hormone therapy, there are daily, monthly, yearly, and seasonablly changes in the body’s reactions, and this is because of our circadian rhythms, and most people don’t really think about that and treat on that. But this type of treatment of cycles and waves and seasonal changes is explored, so responses are both more predictable and better.
Question:
What do your patients say about the Wiley Protocol? What are their responses.
Dana Nelson:
My patients generally love it. It’s not for everybody and there’s some people that it just has not worked for. Probably, the number of patients I have that are still on it amount to about ninety percent. They will fight to the death to maintain it.
